The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 have recognized the growing prominence of Indian higher education institutions on the global stage. A total of 128 Indian universities have been featured in this year’s rankings, positioning India as the second most-represented country, following the United States.

Among these, four Indian institutions have secured positions within the top 500 globally:

  1. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore
    Retaining its position in the 201–250 rank band, IISc continues to lead Indian institutions in the global rankings.
  2. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS), Chennai
    Achieving a ranking in the 351–400 band, SIMATS has made significant strides in global academic recognition.
  3. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi
    Ranked in the 501–600 band, BHU continues to be a prominent institution in India’s higher education landscape.
  4. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore
    Also placed in the 501–600 band, IIT Indore maintains its reputation for excellence in engineering and technology education.

These rankings are based on 18 performance indicators across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry income. The inclusion of these institutions underscores India’s commitment to enhancing the quality and global competitiveness of its higher education sector.
