IIMs address long-standing gaps in management research through competitive fellowships, interdisciplinary initiatives, global tie-ups, and structured mentorship to encourage more students to pursue PhDs.

India’s management research landscape is gradually gaining momentum, although it still trails global benchmarks in high-volume, high-impact publications a situation historically linked to constrained infrastructure and limited incentives for top-tier research. However, the scenario is rapidly evolving as Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) initiate innovative research programmes aimed at promoting India-centric research, supported by increased funding and monthly researcher remuneration ranging from Rs 35,000 to Rs 2 lakh.

Building Bridges for Research Innovation

Dedicated Centres of Excellence across IIMs are creating platforms for cross-disciplinary collaborations and high-impact research. Through initiatives like Gyanodaya, the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation and Publishing at IIM-K supports the development of advanced teaching materials such as case studies and simulations, while collaborating with 59 global institutions to promote research and pedagogical innovation.

Momentum in Management PhDs

Management PhD programmes in India are gaining traction, with alumni securing faculty positions both domestically and internationally, as well as leadership roles in strategy groups, policy institutions, and consulting firms.

Prof. Sandip Chakrabarti, Chairperson of the Doctoral Programme in Management at IIM Ahmedabad, notes, “Historically, India lagged in management research due to infrastructure limitations and restricted incentives for top-tier publications. Over the past five years, however, we have seen not only a steady rise in applications but also improvements in research quality, reflecting the growing national and international reputation of the programme.”

Career Over Research

Despite the growing opportunities, many MBA graduates are drawn to high-paying corporate roles immediately after their degree, often perceiving doctoral studies as costlier or less rewarding in the short term. Prof. Chakrabarti emphasizes that broader awareness about research careers and long-term benefits remains crucial.

Addressing Concerns and Encouraging Research Careers

To counter misconceptions and enhance the attractiveness of research careers, IIMs have strengthened doctoral programmes by offering:

  • Competitive fellowship packages and substantial stipends
  • Research grants and international travel support
  • Human-centric pedagogy and better academic resources
  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary projects across management, behavioural science, technology, economics, and public policy

For instance, IIM Kozhikode has established a robust ecosystem with internal research grants, incentives for high-quality publications, and financial support for national and international conference participation through the CPDA mechanism.

Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode, states, “Research and teaching require a combination of science and art, intrinsic motivation, skill, and aptitude. By fostering these capabilities, we can prepare competent researchers and professors ready to make a meaningful impact on both academia and industry.”
