IITs to Launch Semester Exchange Programme to Boost Academic Mobility Without Impacting JEE-Based Admissions
New Delhi: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are set to introduce a structured inter-IIT semester exchange programme that will enable students to pursue academic coursework, laboratory training, and research projects at another IIT campus for a semester while remaining enrolled at their parent institute. The initiative is aimed at enhancing student mobility, interdisciplinary learning, and career readiness without altering the existing JEE rank–based admission system.
Purpose of the Initiative
The programme seeks to provide students with access to specialised academic strengths and advanced research facilities available across different IITs. Students will be able to earn credit-bearing courses, laboratory credits, and project credits during the exchange period. Final degrees will continue to be awarded by the home institute, ensuring that admissions and degree credentials remain unchanged.
Institutional Perspective
Senior academic leaders have highlighted that careers today increasingly demand interdisciplinary exposure, global perspectives, and engagement with emerging technologies. Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, stated that the framework will enable students to access advanced facilities across campuses, including specialised laboratories and technology platforms available at institutes such as Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
Academic and Career Benefits
The semester exchange framework is expected to:
- Promote interdisciplinary learning and cross-campus research
- Enable participation in innovation and startup immersion programmes
- Provide exposure to emerging technology domains such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, climate technologies, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing
- Strengthen student profiles for industry recruitment and global academic opportunities
Academic leaders noted that even a single semester, combined with vacation periods, can provide substantial time for students to adapt to new academic environments and undertake meaningful research or innovation projects.
Policy Framework and Credit Transfer
The initiative follows a policy-level decision of the IIT Council to establish a formal credit-transfer mechanism across IITs. Previously, inter-IIT collaboration was limited to informal projects or short-term programmes without a system-wide, senate-approved credit framework.
Under the proposed system:
- Students will continue to receive degrees from their home IIT, ensuring no deviation from the JEE-based admission framework.
- Credits earned at the host IIT will be transferred after due approval by the respective academic senates.
- Faculty advisors will assist students in mapping host-institute courses with home-institute curriculum requirements.
Illustrative exchange pathways include students from Indian Institute of Technology Madras undertaking applied research at Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati, or students from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi accessing specialised research facilities at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
Implementation and Operational Considerations
Phased implementation is expected to begin from the next academic cycle, subject to approvals by individual IIT senates. Key operational aspects under consideration include academic calendar alignment, accommodation logistics, credit harmonisation, faculty workload distribution, and financial and scholarship portability.
The IITs are also identifying priority clusters to guide exchanges, including AI & Data Sciences, Semiconductors & Electronics, Climate & Sustainability, Biomedical Engineering & Med-Tech, Quantum Technologies, and Advanced Manufacturing.
